African American Film Critics Association — AAFCA

Karen and Stanley Kramer Award for Social Justice

The African American Film Critics Association, known as AAFCA, established the Stanley Kramer Award for “Social Justice” at the annual AAFCA Awards in 2018.

In 2023, the award was rebranded as the Karen and Stanley Kramer Award for Social Justice at the AAFCA Special Achievement Honors Luncheon.

AAFCA honors cinematic achievements in the Black community, while also actively reviewing and spotlighting cinema at large. Its members represent a geographically diverse cross-section of journalists covering all genres of the cinematic arts. Collectively, they reach a worldwide audience.

In 2017, Karen Sharpe-Kramer was invited to accept the AAFCA “Icon” Award on behalf of the legendary Sidney Poitier. This led AAFCA President and Founder Gil Robertson, in collaboration with the Stanley Kramer Library and Foundation, to establish an award honoring a film, filmmaker, or artist whose work reflects the robust legacy of the late Stanley Kramer by using the creative arts as a tool for social change.

Rob Reiner, Michele Singer Reiner, and the Reiner family were present when Rob accepted the prestigious award. AAFCA and the Kramer family mourn the tragic loss of Rob and Michele.
